The students looked at the work of artists Yusei Nagashima, a watercolor artist who paints fish, the medium Repousse, and Megan Coyle, a collage artist from New York City. The students learned about a new medium and implied versus actual textures.
Day One
The class will begin with a discussion about the artist Yusei Nagashima. Then, they will discuss how different fish look and whether you can see the texture of the fish or not. Then, the students will research to find fish that they find interesting and would like to put into their final collage. They will be required to have sketched at least three fish by the end of class. The students will also be given colored pencils to use in planning out the colors of the fish that they want to use.
Day Two
The students will learn about repoussé and the art material tooling foil. After a demonstration, the students will use their sketches as a stencil and trace them onto the tooling foil. Once all the fish have been transferred onto the tooling foil, the students can use Colored Sharpies to add color to the metal.
Day Three
The watercolor techniques, including wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, scoring, and salt techniques, will be demonstrated. Finally, the students will use watercolor paint to create the paper that will be used for their final collage. to make a base (Sky), water, and seaweed papers.
Day Four
The students will get their watercolor papers back and discuss Megan Coyle and the possibilities of the collage art style. Then, the students will have the rest of the class to create their collage.
Hot melt glue is required to attach the fish.
