Students will be introduced to Tingatinga artwork and the artist Edward Tingatinga from Africa and create their animal dot portraits inspired by the artist and his work.
The students will research different animals and their environments. As the student looks at animals they like, they will stretch them using “Big Shapes” (the geometric shapes found in the animals. i.e., oval body). Students will also have colored pencils to make notes of the colors in that animal and their environment.
Day One
Students will learn about Samuel Armstrong the artist who made the backgrounds for Snow White and Dumbo. They will then see a demonstration of how they will paint their backgrounds. The students will choose colors that are found in the animal’s environment and paint their background.
Day Two
Students will use their sketches to draw a Large version of the animals they chose and sketch it, making sure to take up the whole construction paper page. The students will then cut out and glue down the animal sketch pencil marks up. Finally, if time is left in class, they will mark down the dot patterns they want to apply next class.
Day Three
Day Four
The students will have a demonstration on how to use a Q-tip to make the dot patterns. The students will then spend class adding dots to their animals.
